Faqs On Compulsory basic Training (CBT) & Direct Access Scheme (DAS)

At Brezies we aim to provide our customers in Devon and the South West with the training they need. We hope the following FAQs prove useful.

Q. What do I need to do to get a full license?

brezies logo and the south west of the united kingdomThere are several steps including: get a provisional license; Take Compulsory Basic Training (CBT); Get a bike; Insurance; Practice; take Theory Test; Take Practical Test; get Full License.

Q. What is Compulsory basic Training (CBT)?

If you want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) which is approximately 31 miles per hour)
or you want to ride a motorcycle, you need to undertake CBT.

If you obtained your car license before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped.

There are 5 parts of the CBT Training. The training takes 6-8 hours to complete. After satisfactory completion a DL196 “Certificate of Completion” is given.

  • Introduction
  • Practical on site training
  • Practical on site riding
  • Practical on road training
  • Practical on road riding

Q. What is a “Certificate of Completion” DL196?

This is obtained after passing the CBT. It lasts 2 years and then expires. In the 2 year period, the “Theory” and “Practical” tests are taken to complete the process and obtain a full license.

Q. What is the “Theory test”?

This is a 2 part test: Part 1 Multiple Choice and Part 2 Hazard Perception Test.

The test is carried out on a “touch screen” PC and Part 1 asks 50 questions in 57 minutes. Pass mark is 43 out of 50. Part 2 shows 14 video clips and asks you to recognise developing hazards. Pass score is 44 out of 75.

Q. What is the “Practical test”?

You will apply using form DL26 from DSA (Area Office or Driving Test Centre).

On arrival at the test you need your license, CBT certificate and to sign that your machine is insured.

You will have radio communication with the examiner. You will be tested on:

  • Emergency Stop Exercise.
  • Wheeling/ Stand Exercise.
  • U-Turn Exercise.
  • Slow Ride Exercise.

Test takes about 35 minutes.

Q. What is the “Direct Access Scheme”?

If you are aged 21 years or over you can take the test on a larger machine. Advantage of the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) is that you learn to ride on a more powerful machine, more like the machine you will be using on the road when you pass.
